I had the time of my life - in all the ways - and I really can’t do it justice in a social media post.

I also didn’t want to let it pass without any mention, so here are a few words about it. It was a 2 weeks Comics and Graphic Novel Residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts. There were 19 participant cartoonists and 3 mentors. We each had a lovely bedroom and amazing studios, and from that amazing studio I saw the mountains and deer and elk.

I didn’t think I needed a big studio, but boy was it ever nice to be able to map out my project on the long long wall! I was working on my first foray into fiction, so being able to plot it all out like this was a real treat.

There were readings and lectures and group crits and all kinds of professional development and peer support. More than anything, there was the thrill of being with so many other comics people for two full weeks. I’ve always found comics to be a lonely pursuit, and suddenly it was anything but.

Here’s to drawing comics and building community!

A massive thank you to the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity for the amazing opportunity!

I am deeply grateful to be living and creating on Chief Drygeese territory which has, from time immemorial, been the traditional land of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation.
